Learn the Endless Benefits of Massage

It’s 2013 and New Year resolutions are everywhere. Massage would be a good one: it feels great, your are giving yourself a lovely indulgence instead of eliminating a vice( booze, food, shopping), and the positive effects keep on giving long after you have left your appointment.

I think everyone has known for years now that massage feels good and is relaxing, two pretty great things. HOWEVER in the last few years a lot of studies and research have confirmed the benefits of massage are real and numerous. Here are a few:

1.  Massages Ease Pain
Regular massage leads to decreased stiffness and soreness, as well as gives an individual increased range of motion. The elimination of pain with massage has been found equal to exercise, yoga, and acupuncture.
One note: as with exercising the first time in a long while, a massage may leave you a bit sore the next day. Don’t let this turn you off, it can be a sign that you may need it a little more often!

2.  Massages Boosts Immune Response
multiple studies have indicated massage assists in a better functioning immune system:

3. It Makes You Better Looking
Massage increases circulation, which is great for your body, AND your looks! Better blood flow encourages lymphatic drainage which eliminates toxins and reduces puffiness, delivers nutrients to skin and hair, and gives you the coveted rosy glow.

4. Eases Cancer Treatment
Countless studies have shown that massage can relieve fatigue, pain, anxiety, depression and nausea in cancer patients and other diseases. On top of this I have heard from many clients living with cancer that the joy of receiving touch not associated with medical procedures is a benefit unto itself.

5. Assists in the Management of Stress and Depression
Massage is relaxing. Because of that it also soothes anxiety and depression. Massage reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol and adrenaline, resulting in heightened spirits and often lower blood pressure. It also boosts the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine, which are involved in depression.

A side note, many of my clients have stress related acne which a also in part due to the increased hormone levels. Massage can benefit in this area as well! Stress is not only reduced when receiving the actual massage, but also when a client sees it one their calendar in the middle of an insane work week, or when a good nights sleeps occurs because of a great massage!
