Yes….you do need a massage
Massage therapy was once considered a luxury or frivolous use of time and money. Historically, medical professionals have understood what is only recently becoming widespread knowledge; massage provides benefits far beyond relaxation. When administered by a licensed professional, massage helps reduce chronic pain, anxiety, and insomnia. It is also helpful for headaches, digestive issues, and even depression, the list goes on.

With all the known benefits, I wonder…why isn’t everyone getting massage regularly? One potential reason is that unlike much of modern Western medicine massage is generally not a hugely profitable practice nor has it been deemed “necessary” by health insurance companies. I imagine picking up my usual medication for Crohn’s and paying an $18 co-pay. If I was paying out of pocket for the same medication it would be $492. If my insurance didn’t cover this medication, I would be seeking out alternative options. Therefore, it makes sense why many people do not get massage if their only choice is paying out of pocket. But this is starting to change!
In the last decade we are seeing an uptick of insurance companies including massage therapy into their plans. Employers are also getting on board. Seattle tech companies have included massage therapy into health insurance plans and as part of flex spending accounts. TIP: If your insurance company only covers massage therapy from a handful of “in network” oftentimes, inconvenient clinics, it is worth contacting them to see if they will reimburse you for services with non-network therapists. We have many clients who can submit their Spa Noir massage receipt and receive a reimbursement. At Spa Noir we offer some of the best massage therapists Seattle has to offer. Your massage service is only further enhanced by our friendly staff, relaxing environment and chill music.
The most important take-away? Massage is beneficial for our mental, physical and emotional health. If your health insurance covers massage: GET IT!! Whether it be with us or elsewhere, just do it!
If you are new to massage or unsure what type of appointment to schedule, I suggest beginning with a 20-30 minute chair massage. This massage is fully clothed and focused entirely on your back, shoulders and neck. It is the perfect introduction to the sweet relief of massage.
